We caught up with Lola Watkins, who joins our Academy as Trainee Web Analyst. We asked Lola about her decision to join the world of analytics following her recent graduation in mathematics and what she hopes to get out of her year’s training.
Firstly, welcome Lola. You’re breaking new ground as our first academy recruit, how’s your first month been?
It’s been good, a little nerve-racking as this is my first-ever job, but everyone has been friendly and welcoming, and I’ve been enjoying learning all about the world of digital marketing and analysis.
I spent some time in my degree looking at and analysing data and using programs like R, so I think that basic understanding will help to give me a solid foundation to develop my analytical skills further.
Lola Watkins, Trainee Web Analyst
What was it about the role that appealed to you?
I thought that the work seemed interesting, I love learning, and it seemed like something exciting and new that could still build on the skills I developed in my degree.
How did you discover the Fresh Egg Academy?
I posted on LinkedIn asking for help finding my first job, and Julian reached out to tell me about the academy.
Maths is a great skill to have as a web analyst, how do you see your degree helping you as you develop your analytical skills?
I spent some time in my degree looking at and analysing data and using programs like R, so I think that basic understanding will help to give me a solid foundation to develop my analytical skills further. I guess mainly doing my degree through a pandemic and having to study a lot from home made me build my skills around organisation and time management as I had to take charge of my learning, and I think that will stand me in good stead to build on all the skills I will need in this job.
Did you have any form of involvement in the world of digital marketing during your maths degree?
No not really.
What do you find most interesting about the world of digital marketing so far?
I found learning about how search engines work and everything that goes into the ads we see pretty interesting. I use search engines and see ads almost every day, but I had not put much thought into their inner workings before.

Did you think digital marketing was a possible career option before finding out about the academy opportunity?
I had looked at some other data analysis jobs, but no, digital marketing was not something I had thought about before.
What made you decide Fresh Egg was the right step for your future career path?
The job sounded interesting and like a great opportunity, and the atmosphere and the people I met when I came in to see the office for the first time and for my interview seemed lovely and enthusiastic about this opportunity.
How are you enjoying your introduction to the world of Google Analytics? Has anything surprised you?
I knew that with cookies and everything, websites were collecting your data, but I didn’t know what that data was, so it has been interesting to see all of that data in Google Analytics and how it comes together. One surprising thing was how data is used to get an ad to follow you around the internet to get you back to buy a product you were looking at previously.
Is there anything specific you are looking to learn about in the coming months?
I have been learning about data visualisation and looking at charts in newsletters. I think it’s really cool figuring out the best way to present the information so I’m excited to start learning about Looker Studio.
Have you played much with AI? If yes, have you found any interesting ways to use it?
I haven’t yet, but I’ve been meaning to.
If you could only use one website (or app), which one would you choose?
Spotify, I couldn’t live without music.
What do your friends and family think you do for a job?
They think I am learning how to look at data to be able to help people improve their marketing.
What's your go-to hobby outside of work?
I recently picked up crochet and love it, but I am always doing some art and craft activity.
Finally, (the most important question) what is your favourite way to eat an egg?
Easy, baked in a cake!
